Blue Ocean Charters-Tuhua Ecotrip

Tuhua (Mayor Island)

Tuhua is situated 35 km north of Tauranga and has a remarkable history of violent volcanic upheaval, tribal warfare ang legendary big game fishing.

Today it is renowned for its spectacular scenery, and the opportunities afforded by its wildlife refuge (established 1953) and its marine reserve which was created off the Northern end of the Island in 1993.

There are healthy populations of bellbird, tui, wood pigeon, fantail, grey warbler, waxeye, kingfisher, pied tit, kaka, morepork, shining cuckoo, and harrier hawk. As there are no natural predators on the Island, the birds are quite fearless and can be viewed at close range.

The water clarity, abundant species of fish life and spectacular underwater scenery make the area popular for diving and snorkeling.
